Blind Typing Test

Screen blurs after your peek time. Type blind until timer ends. The reveal is the best part — humbling, funny, and addictive. Share your results. Practice first if new.

Free Online Typing Speed Test

TypeRift is a clean, distraction-free typing test built for focus. No sign-up, no clutter — just start typing. Your words per minute, accuracy percentage, and a live WPM progression graph appear the moment the timer ends.

How It Works

The timer starts automatically on your first keystroke. Choose a duration from 15 seconds to 5 minutes, and a text mode: everyday words, famous quotes, real code snippets, or pure numbers. When time runs out, your results pop in with a satisfying animation. Your personal best is saved locally so you can track your progress over time.

Why Practice Typing Speed?

Typing is the most used skill in the modern workplace. Whether you are writing emails, coding, chatting, or taking notes, faster typing means more productivity. Studies show that improving from 40 WPM to 70 WPM saves over 20 minutes per day of pure typing time. Over a year, that is more than 120 hours saved — three full work weeks.

Beyond speed, accuracy matters enormously. Every typo requires a correction that takes 2-3x longer than typing the character correctly in the first place. Practicing with TypeRift trains both speed and accuracy simultaneously.

Typing as a Game

The best way to improve is to make practice feel like play. TypeRift tracks your personal best for every mode and duration, so you are always competing against yourself. The WPM graph at the end of each test shows your speed curve — did you start slow and warm up, or did you peak early and fade? Analyzing your patterns helps you improve strategically.

Challenge your friends by sharing your score after each test. Can they beat your WPM? The competitive element makes regular practice addictive in the best way.

What is WPM?

WPM stands for Words Per Minute. It is calculated as (correctly typed characters / 5) / time in minutes. The average adult types 40-50 WPM. Above 70 WPM is considered fast, and 100+ is expert level. Learn more about WPM or see how you compare to average typing speeds by age and profession.

Unique Modes

Blind Type blurs the screen after a few seconds — you type completely blind, then see the dramatic reveal at the end. It is TypeRift's signature mode and the most fun to share. Mirror Type flips the text horizontally for an extreme brain challenge. Code Mode uses real JavaScript, Python, and SQL snippets for developers who want to type faster where it counts.

Test Durations

Tips to Type Faster

First, learn proper finger placement on the home row (ASDF JKL;). Second, never look at the keyboard — train your eyes to stay on the screen. Third, practice for 10-15 minutes daily rather than one long session per week. Consistency beats intensity. Fourth, focus on accuracy before speed. Fast but sloppy typing is actually slower than moderate but clean typing because of correction time.

Start with practice mode (no timer) to build confidence, then benchmark with timed tests.

What is a blind typing test, and how do you take one?

A blind typing test hides the text while you type, so you must rely on touch typing instead of looking at the screen; on TypeRift, the screen blurs after your chosen peek time (2s, 10s, 30s or 1m), you keep typing until the timer ends, and then you see your result.

The goal is not only speed. It shows how well your fingers know the keys when your eyes cannot check them.

How much of the test is blind?

The table below shows how long the screen stays hidden in a 60-second test. It assumes the peek time is counted from the start of the test.

Peek timeVisibleBlindShare of test blind
2s2 s58 s96.7%
10s10 s50 s83.3%
30s30 s30 s50%
1m60 s0 s0%

With a 1m peek on a 60-second test, nothing is hidden. Pick a shorter peek if you want a true blind run.

Example of a score

Say you run the 30s test and type 150 correct characters. That is 150 / 5 = 30 words. In 0.5 minutes, that gives 30 / 0.5 = 60 WPM. If you pressed 160 characters in total, your accuracy is 150 / 160 = 93.75%.

How to practise with this tool

  1. Start with the 60s duration and a 30s peek. Half the test is blind, so it is a gentle start.
  2. Move to a 10s peek, then a 2s peek, once your accuracy feels stable.
  3. Begin with the words mode. Switch to numbers or code only when words feel easy, because they are harder to type blind.
  4. Use the WPM graph after the reveal. A sharp drop right after the blur shows you were reading the screen, not typing from memory of the keys.
  5. Compare your errors with a normal run of the same duration. The gap shows how much you depend on seeing the text.
  6. Press Tab to restart for another try, or Esc to reset.

Keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF JKL;). Do not look down at the keyboard either, since that defeats the point of the test.

Is my blind typing score lower than in a normal typing test?

It is often lower, mainly in accuracy, because you cannot see your mistakes while typing. Run a normal test with the same duration and mode, then compare the two results to see the difference.
